Lately, I, tired of winter, have been growing lentils, eager to see something green in a world of brown and white. Why lentils? First of all, those were one of the two kinds of beans in my fridge. Two, lentils sprout in 3-5 days. Three, lentils are an excellent food source, and when your beans grow big enough, they will start to produce pods of lentil beans that can be dried and cooked! How did I do this? Well... How to Grow Beans on Your Windowsill (the Flala method)You need: A plastic bag Beans (I'm using lentils) A paper towel a flowerpot or container with holes in the bottom (I'm using the bottom of a plastic bottle) Water Soil Step 1: Easy GerminationTo ease the germination process, soak the paper towel in water, and squeeze out the excess water. Place the paper towel in the bag, and carefully put in the beans, 2 inches from the bottom of the bag, so they are not sitting in water. Wait a week, or until the sprouts are an inch tall. Dispose of the bag and paper towel, as they will now be moldy. But keep the sprouts! Step 2: PlantingFill your container 3/4 of the way full of soil. Drip some water on the soil, enough so that the soil is lightly moist. Poke your finger into the soil and create a small hole, big enough to submerge the seed and root. Repeat for all of the beans you are planting. Step 3: GrowingWater your plant every day, but never over-soak the soil! Then wait. And Wait. Eventually, when your plants' roots out-grow the container, you can transplant them to another container, and eventually outside.
Happy growing!
